ZIP prioritizes broad compatibility
ZIP creation and extraction are built into many operating systems and applications. That makes it a practical default for ordinary sharing. Files such as JPEG photos, MP4 videos, and already-compressed PDFs may not shrink much because their internal data is compressed already.
RAR offers additional archive features
RAR is commonly associated with strong compression options, multi-part archives, and recovery records. Creating RAR archives often depends on specific software, while extraction support is not as universal as ZIP. These differences matter when recipients cannot install additional applications.
Choose for the receiving workflow
- Use ZIP when simple opening across devices is the priority.
- Consider RAR when its split-volume or recovery features are specifically useful.
- Share passwords separately from encrypted archives.
- Inspect archive contents and file names before extracting unknown files.
An archive is not automatically safe because it is compressed. Treat files inside it according to their real types and source.
